the concrete painter simone hamann and the sculptor ulla reiter come together to explore the boundaries of their materials.
simone hamann’s works are part of an ongoing painterly investigation into color as an independent phenomenon. the paintings do not convey fixed signs or meanings, but rather open states. color is not depicted, but placed — as a luminous event, as a gentle vibration, as a quiet counterpart that seems to flow.
opposite these works are ulla reiter’s sculptural pieces and drawings of cosmic beings. her foam sculptures combine figures from modernism and mythology. the soft material allows seemingly dangerous warriors to appear gentle. proportions are shifted, individual ornaments are created and recombined.
together, the two artists form a unity that — much like the cosmic phenomenon of parhelia, or “sun dogs” — emphasizes the accidental companions of life.
